Hey Matt,
I was watching a Lakers game and thinking of you. It’s such as shame that when they are finally good — first time in ten years, you can’t be here witnessing them thriving and winning.
It was too soon, too sudden, and too young.
You and I have the enthusiasm for the same two things: science and basketball. They are the two pillars of our lives, two things that we’ve spent the most time and emotions on.
Success in both fields share some key attributes: commitment, team work, and discipline. You had them all. Just like Pat Riley said about basketball, “There are only two options regarding commitment. You’re either in or out. There’s no such thing as a life in between.” You were all in. You were all in on science. And you were on your way to a first-ballet Hall of Fame career.
Your path ended prematurely and I’m still grinding. I can do nothing but take a note from your playbook of commitment and dedication, growing and finding my cues, and navigating and connecting to the layer that belongs to myself.
Warmly,
David
